Externship, UCCS, Fall 2016
COllege of Education, Teaching & Learning
One of the most influential and rewarding aspects of my doctoral training was participating in an externship with Dr. Elaine Cheesman at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Similar to a practicum experience in teacher preparation programs, the externship provided me with the opportunity to assume the role of a faculty member with the guidance of a mentor from a different university than where I was completing coursework. The following are examples of some of the activities I completed while in CO:
- participated in a two-day department summit at the beginning of the semester for the College of Education
- attended all faculty meetings
- advised both graduate and undergraduate students on coursework, evidence-based teaching practices, and career decisions
- collaborated with other faculty to improve programming
- implemented a pilot study
- partnered with community resources to familiarize myself and improve local educational services
- participated in state reading conference
- taught both a graduate level and undergraduate course

Multisensory Structured Language Education
A graduate-level course focused upon research-based content of the foundational concepts about oral and written language learning, the knowledge of the structure of language, and teaching strategies in phonemic awareness and systematic phonics, including spelling, and morphology. In this course, we utilized a flipped classroom structure, in which students would view instructor created teaching modules as homework, and then would practice teaching methods and content during lectures. To reflect on my own teaching practices, I asked all students to complete an evaluation form. These can be viewed, along with the syllabus, at the link below. |
Early School Diversity Practicum
An undergraduate seminar course that introduced potential teachers to the roles, responsibilities, and qualities of professional educators in public schools. Students chose from a variety of lectures taught by the three instructors and related this information to their practicum experiences in elementary and secondary school settings.
